7,350km away in a UP village, jubilations mark local lad Raj Mishra’s coronation as mayor of British town

MIRZAPUR: Born and raised in a remote village in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur, Raj Mishra, 37, a councillor of the Conservative Party, has been elected the mayor of Wellingborough, a market town in the North Northamptonshire over 100 km from London. The results were announced on May 13.
Wellingborough, an ancient town of the Anglo-Saxon era, has a population of 56000, only about 1% which is of Indian origin, making Raj’s win even more significant.
